Can Hula Hooping Slim Your Waist?

When I first began hula hooping I loved it because it was such a fun and artful activity. There is no doubt that hula hooping can really make exercise something to look forward to. In my own experience it wasn’t until I had my second baby that I discovered the benefits of hula hooping for weight loss. After giving birth to my second child, I hula hooped daily for 20 minutes for a few weeks and made it a priority to not miss a day of hooping.

I found that hula hooping in the morning was the best time for me to gain momentum whilst everyone else in the house where still in bed. I made it a mission that despite the lack of sleep or obstacles of having a new born, I would make time to hula hoop daily. Not only did I hula hoop in the mornings but some days when the mornings got away from me, i would make sure that i would hula hoop at night time whilst watching my favourite Netflix series.

It wasn’t until month 2 into hula hooping daily that I drastically noticed that I was on my way to strengthening my core again and noticing that my waist was definitely getting slimmer. After having my second baby, I realised that I had developed muscle separation of the abdominal muscles which meant that I wasn’t able to do stomach crunches or any hardcore abdominal muscle training right away.

During this season post-pregnancy, hula hooping was my saviour! Quickly I had noticed that the kilos started to drop as I also tweaked my eating habits eliminating sugar and lowering my carbohydrate intake.

I found that hula hooping for at least 30 minutes a day not only helped me loose the extra kilos that I was carrying as well as slim my waist but It also helped my posture. Eight months on I had lost 10 kilos which brought me back to my original weight before having children.

Not only did hula hooping daily help me slim my waist back to what it was before children, but it also got me into a healthy routine of making sure that I dedicated 30 minutes to myself only, which is such a great way to rejuvenate so that I can be the best mum, friend, wife that I can be.

It is no surprise that by hula hooping each day I can surely witness that my waist line is tighter and that hula hooping can definitely help with slimming down your waist and tone your tummy in a fun way which will never get boring.

Beginner Hula Hoop Dance Routine

Hi Hula Hoopers! Here’s a simple Beginners hula hooping routine which will get you flowing into into a hoop dance groove. It consists of basic hula hooping moves and tricks which are easy to learn. During this hula hoop class you will also learn how to transition from one hula hoop trick to the next smoothly.

The Hula Hoop I’m using is a polypro hoop which is 85cm in diameter. You could also use one of my 85cm Hula Hoops as well as my 95cm Dance Hula Hoops to learn this beginners hoop dance combo.

Palm Spin Hoop Trick Tutorial

There is something very empowering about being able to master a hula hoop trick. As much as I encourage new hula hooper’s to experiment and learn hula hoop tricks on and off body, I am a big advocate of encouraging people to learn all of the basics of hula hooping when starting out so that you can feel comfortable about switching from one hula hooping move to another.

This allows for you to flow all of your hula hooping tricks together effortlessly Having said this, I can’t deny the magic one feels when they have finally, after a lot of practice mastered a hula hoop trick.

The Palm Spin hula hoop trick is definitely a favorite for me, I just love adding this one in between switching from vertical to horizontal plane and vice versa. The Palm Spin makes a great way to create the illusion the hoop is spinning around your hand. It is a great hoop move to transition into on body hooping or off body hooping as you are able to move straight into vertical or horizontal plane.

Before you grab your hula hoop and have a good crack at this one, I recommend practicing balancing the hoop on your palm along with taking these steps to performing the palm spin. In this Palm Spin hoop trick tutorial we go from vertical hand hooping straight onto an open palm spin.

Throwing in a chest roll hula hooping trick when practicing hula hoop dance adds some real sparks to your hoop dance practice. This chest roll in hula hooping teaches us balance as well as aligning our body in a central and balanced stance whilst doing the chest roll. Our wrist control here is key and as we practice this move we gain more control and strength in our wrists to control the hoop as we roll it across. This hula hoop trick can me tricky if not practiced properly, however with the write posture and stance you will master it in no time. Continuous K Roll Hula Hooping Tutorial

In this hula hoop tutorial, I explain how to do a continuous k roll which is also known as the continuous vertical chest roll. I love adding this hoop trick into my hoop dance flow because it adds a funky illusion that the hoop is rolling down my chest from my hands up above down to my receiving hand below.

You will find that the K Roll will help you practice your eye hand coordination plus give you a great arm workout! I have seen the k roll combined with hoop folds which looks incredible!

5 Things I Learned About Hula Hooping

Pre hula hooping days, back in 2010 before settling down and having a family, I invested a lot of my time in hobbies and made sure that my spare time outside of work consisted of creative and fun activities. Not to mention now days I look back and realize just how much spare time I had compared to now raising a family, which gives me tremendous satisfaction and joy, however the days for taking up new hobbies or interests are gone for a few years. Having said that there is lots of fun in entertaining a toddler and engaging in what makes her giggle and getting to share in many fun kids activities.

I was living with my husband in a small one bedroom apartment by the beach in Dee Why on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, Australia when during my lunch break at my work computer I somehow stumbled upon a YouTube Video of Shakti Sunfire performing  hoop dance in this video with the Pyronauts at San Fransisco Decompression in 2009. My jaw literally dropped and I found myself on a quest on YouTube in pursuit of more and more hula hoop videos which ignited a fire inside me to give it a go as soon as I got home, so I remember on my way home from work dropping into my local Rebel Sports store who had a selection of small kids hula hoops which I eagerly raced home with to play around with at home in the companion of plenty of hula hooping YouTube clips which just fed my fire even more! Hula Hooping Workshop at Brookvale

It is mid spring here in Sydney and I’m loving the smell of all the flowering fauna on our Northern Beaches. I dare to say that my hooping practice has been minimal during the winter months, however I’m super excited to get outside and start hooping out in the sunshine barefoot 🙂

In the coming weeks I will be introducing some new hula hoop designs so keep your peepers peeled.
